Dream Golf | Muni Makeover

Chicago’s Roger Steele is convinced golf, coupled with a healthy dose of social media and some strong opinions, can be a force for good.

Fresh PERSPECTIVE

By robert thompson

There’s no question the world is full of divergent perspectives and strong opinions. And Roger Steele is convinced golf can play a role in bringing people together, regardless of their position on the issues of the day.

“I think we’re only scratching the surface of what golf can do,” he says from his home on the west side of Chicago. “I want to lead the change to have golf bring people together, regardless of their differences. Everyone wants people to think one way, but we need to open everyone up to other people’s ideas. I know the game can do that.”

To some, Steele is best described as an “influencer,” one of those people on social media with an active and large base of followers. And while Steele is heavily involved on Instagram, the product he’s pitching these days is his personal brand—his ideas and opinions on the game of golf. He doesn’t hold back (“It’s a big step for a Black dude who is mediocre at golf and curses a lot on social media,” Steele says in one post), and his passion for the game comes through, as does his unique perspective on the sport. But let’s be straight here—Steele isn’t some hack with a decent social following. He’s actually a very accomplished player with a handicap that is only a couple of ticks from scratch. “My standards are likely higher than they should be,” he says. “I figure as long as I take care of my body I should be able to get better for a long time.”
