Patience and Persistence in the Search for Great Golf

Sometimes the best ideas need a little time to germinate. After all, when you’re dealing with the natural world, with local zoning and water districts, with contractors and teams spread across the country, you just can’t wave a magic wand and “let there be golf.” If it were only that easy. Patience, persistence, and open-mindedness—that’s what it takes.

Our journey to opening Sedge Valley started at the very outset of developing Sand Valley. We loved the land that Sedge now occupies and at first saw it as an opportunity for another “alternative” course. But we waited. When Tom Doak viewed the property and came back with the idea of a regulation course on a smaller swath of ground, we let go of our first thoughts and fully bought into the vision Tom presented. We were thrilled to open the course in July 2024.

Similarly, the seeds for Shorty’s were planted years ago during the design phase of Bandon Trails. We had always been struck by the choppy dunes south of the Preserve. Coore and Crenshaw considered incorporating them into Bandon Trails, ultimately decided against it. Years later, we decided to add a second short course at Bandon, and when the first official ball was struck on Shorty’s on the resort’s 25th anniversary, it just felt right to see golfers traversing the dunes that had always spoken to us.

We’ve certainly had a few “pinch me” moments building out the first course at Rodeo Dunes—a Coore and Crenshaw design on a site that combines the feel of rugged Irish links with a character totally unique to its Western heritage. Rodeo literally began as a dream. From the time Michael “discovered” those beautiful dunes, we have spent six years revising the vision for the land. If you’re like us, you simply can’t wait to explore Coore and Crenshaw’s routing with clubs in hand and a local caddie by your side.

As we pursue great new sites, we’ve been lucky enough to tap into the dogged persistence and passion of others. Brett Messerall covered one million (!) Texas acres looking for the perfect golf site and believed he found it just north of Nacogdoches, the oldest city in Texas. While we look for reasons to say “no” to most projects, a phone call with Brett led Michael to book a trip to see the site. The rolling, wooded, sand-based site reminded him of a mashup of the sites underlying Pinehurst, Pine Valley, and Shoreacres. The first course at Wild Spring Dunes—a Tom Doak design—uses the best of the property’s ravines, rolling hills, and “Mt. Baldy,” the huge, historic sand dune that looms ever-present.

Patience, persistence, and open-mindedness have been crucial in guiding our journey. What’s the common thread through it all? A pursuit of soul-stirring golf experiences so strong, so pure and raw, that you are inspired and can’t help but dream of returning to play again. Thank you for sharing this passion—and this journey—with us.

Yours in golf,

Michael and Chris Keiser
